Machakos Town Community Led Bio-Waste Facility - Update
Together with the construction team of Umande Trust, Biogas Taita technicians have completed the two biogas digesters for the bio-waste facility in the middle of town. We are now waiting for the contractor to finish the rest of the building on top of the biogas digesters (the facility includes public toilets, community kitchen, office, shops, community hall, water selling point and a garbage sorting area). We have had our first big community meeting recently to share ideas and to start the process of forming a Community Based Organisation to run and maintain the facility. We have a one–year community capacity building program attached to the project in which the community will receive guidance, support and training on how to manage the building and generate income. The facility will create local employment, as well as providing a solution for waste disposal, and will increase awareness about waste management and waste disposal within the community. More similar projects in other parts of Kenya are in the pipeline.
